Alex Trebek to resume chemotherapy following setback in cancer battle

on September 17, 2019, 12:49pm

Alex Trebek will undergo a new round of chemotherapy as he continues his battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

The longtime Jeopardy! host disclosed his cancer diagnosis back in March, but responded well to the initial round of treatment. In May, Trebek told fans he was in “near remission,” and in August, he announced that he had finished chemotherapy and would appear on season 36 of Jeopardy! as scheduled.

However, Trebek’s condition has worsened considerably in the last month. After beginning immunotherapy, “I lost about 12 pounds in a week and my numbers went sky-high, much higher than they were when I was diagnosed,” Trebek explained during an appearance on Tuesday’s Good Morning America.

Trebek still intends to host Jeopardy! throughout his treatment. However, he also acknowledged the stark reality of the disease and its low survival rate. “I realize that there is an end in sight for me just as there is for everyone else.”

“I’m 79 years old, I’ve had one hell of a good life, and I’ve enjoyed it,” Trebek added. “The thought of passing on doesn’t frighten me, it doesn’t.”
