Twitter officially doubles tweet length to 280 characters, available worldwide beginning today

on November 07, 2017, 4:14pm

As of today, Twitter has expanded its per tweet limit to 280 characters.

In September, the company began beta testing the expanded character limit, which is double the previous limit of 140 characters. According to Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, users who had early access to the 280 characters saw more likes, retweets, mentions, and followers.

Further findings from Twitter’s test were detailed in a blog posting. Once the initial novelty of the 280 characters was subsided, Twitter says only 5% of tweets sent from the beta group were longer than 140 characters, and just 2% were over 190 characters. With the expanded character limit, tweets in English hitting the character limit dropped from 9% to 1%.

The change officially went into effect on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. EST and should be available to all Twitter users within the next two hours. Though, please no one tell Donald.
