Much of the material on Moh Lhean, the new album from WHY?, was written while frontman Yoni Wolf recovered from a frightening health scare. As he recovered from the ordeal, he found himself more in touch with the glories of living than ever before. That revitalized outlook is the predominant influencer on the record’s latest single, “Proactive Evolution”.
Understated instrumentation gives way to uplifting harmonies as Wolf and a group of backup singers that include mewithoutYou’s Aaron Weiss celebrate the power of being ever present in your own mind. “I’d be drying up nearly bone/ Alone in the lack…. If I wasn’t when I am/ But I’m on fire/ And I’m on right now,” go the lyrics. At the song’s end, the voices of thinkers like Sharon Salzberg and Ram Dass and Wolf’s own doctors can be heard espousing the same sort of perspective that helped the songwriter through his tough times.
