As if the loss of David Bowie, Prince, and Leonard Cohen wasn’t hard enough, The Get Up Kids frontman Matt Pryor has also had to say goodbye to a number of personal acquaintances over the years. These deaths, as well as the friends and families they’ve left behind, are the focal point of his upcoming solo effort, Memento Mori. “This album is both a way for us to remember them and to celebrate everyday the lives that we still have,” he explained in a press statement.

Along with appreciating life, Pryor makes it a point to reject death. This brazen approach toward mortality drives his latest LP track, “I Won’t Be Afraid”. Over gentle, folky guitar, he offers up a calming but resolute promise: “When the day is gone/ The light begins to fade, I won’t be afraid.” “This is a song about not being afraid to die,” Pryor tells Consequence of Sound. “Well, or more about trying to not be afraid to die. It’s not something that I am not very good at, I worry about it all the time.”

The self-produced Memento Mori, which follows 2013’s Wrist Slitter, lands in stores on February 17th through Equal Vision/Rory Records. For more, hear “A Small Explosion”.
