Patriots Day is Peter Berg’s recounting of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, but the film’s intense and unsettling tone owes just as much to the composing team of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who wrote the original score. The Academy Award-winning duo are at their sharpest here, taking inspiration from slasher movie synths to create a soundtrack that practically revels in tension.

“Music on a film like this is such an important and powerful part of the experience”, producer Hutch Parker notes in a new exclusive featurette, which you can view above. Adds co-producer Scott Stuber: “[Reznor and Ross] find the right depths of music to allow you to emote to the screen, but they also pull it out of you without forcing it on you.”

Patriots Day stars Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Bacon, J.K. Simmons, John Goodman, and Michelle Monaghan and is now playing in theaters nationwide. Purchase or stream the film’s original soundtrack via iTunes, Apple Music, or Spotify.
