The Emoji Movie is still a terrible idea, but here’s the first teaser trailer anyway — watch

When Sony shared details about The Emoji Movie (previously known as the unwieldy Emojimovie: Express Yourself) earlier this year, it sounded like a horrible joke gone wrong. A movie based on the ubiquitous texting smiley faces? Sure, why not. It is 2016, after all. Pile it on.

Now a teaser trailer has been released. It stars the ‘meh’ emoji, is optimized for mobile (because emojis), and is soundtracked by Charles Wright’ “Express Yourself” (again, because emojis). Nothing in the trailer suggests Emoji Movie will be funnier than T.J. Miller’s “audition” video, which you can watch below. When even a poop joke can’t elicit a laugh, you’re in trouble.

In terms of a plot, it involves the “secret lives of emojis” trapped in a smartphone. The protagonist of the animated movie is Gene (Miller), a unique emoji who is capable of facial expressions, but wants to be “normal” like the other emojis. So, he goes on a journey with the aid of his best friend, Hi-5 (James Corden) and “the notorious code breaker emoji” Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer) to find the Code which will fix him. Naturally, hijinks ensue and their smartphone entrapped world is threatened.

The Emoji Movie hits theaters August 4th, 2017. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you.
