It may not be October 3rd, but it’s an exciting day for Mean Girls fans. During a Facebook Live session for CNN on Thursday, Cady Heron herself, Lindsay Lohan, expressed a strong desire to return to the drama of the Plastics — and she’s even started working on plans for a sequel.
“I have already written a treatment for it,” she told fans (via EW). “I just need a response. I know Mark Waters, the director; he’d happily come back.” She said she’s “been trying so hard” to get the sequel off the ground, but admits it’s “not in my hands.” “I know that Tina Fey, and Lorne Michaels and all of Paramount [Pictures] are very busy. But I will keep forcing it and pushing it on them until we do it.”
Lohan’s idea for Mean Girls 2 wouldn’t try to force the characters back into high school 10 years later, either. Instead, it would find Regina George and the gang continuing their backstabbing and plotting as married women. “I was with Fey the other day and I said, ‘We should do another Mean Girls, like an older version where they’re all housewives and they’re all cheating.’ That would be really funny.”
As for the other cast members, Rachel McAdams, who played Regina, previously said she’d be game for a return if Fey was also back. Lohan has ideas for who else to add to the cast, too. “I would love to have Jamie Lee Curtis, Jimmy Fallon in the movie.”
Still, fans might not want to break out the Mathletes sweatshirts just yet. Fey is currently working on a Mean Girls musical set to premiere in Washington, D.C., but that might be all the interest she has in returning to the Plastics. Back in 2014, the cast got back together for the film’s 10th anniversary, and the writer seemed to think the time has passed for any thought of a sequel. “At the time we did want to start the conversation about the sequel, and for whatever reason, I was like, ‘No!!! We shouldn’t do that!’” she said at the time. “Now I look back and I’m like, ‘Why?’ But now, no — it’s too late now.”
