New Lemony Snicket teaser offers first look at Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf — watch

Let’s try this again. Twelve years ago, as you probably remember, an ultimately ill-fated attempt was made to bring Lemony Snicket’s popular A Series of Unfortunate Events books to the screen. It was ill-fated in the fiscal sense, anyway; the film is actually a good bit of fun and saw what may be Jim Carrey’s only successful return to his manic, character-heavy ’90s milieu. It definitely didn’t launch the franchise it was supposed to (because condensing three books into a film under two hours long was just not a good idea), but now Netflix is giving it another shot as a series.

A Series of Unfortunate Events will still follow the sad, tragic misadventures of the Baudelaire siblings, a trio of whip-smart young children forced to live with the nefarious Count Olaf after their parents are killed in a suspicious fire. As they’re forced to adapt to Olaf’s unforgiving methods of child rearing, they also begin to notice strange things going on with and around Olaf, and have to rely on one another to survive.

The first real trailer for the show is still just a teaser, but gives audiences a better look at Neil Patrick Harris’ distinctly Scrooge-esque prosthetics, and the new Baudelaires. It’ll be enough to tie fans over until A Series of Unfortunate Events premieres on Netflix on January 13th, 2017.
