Sting remembers Prince and David Bowie on new song “50,000” — watch

on September 17, 2016, 3:15pm

It’s been a troubling year for aging rock stars, who have seen the deaths of contemporaries such as David Bowie, Prince, Glenn Frey, and Lemmy and probably wondered at some point, “Am I next?” Sting appeared on Friday’s episode of Later… With Jools Holland to premiere his new song “50,000”, a song that ponders that question and finds the bassist contending with his own mortality.

Directly inspired by Bowie, Prince, and the other rockers who’ve passed away this year, “50,000” also offers a message of hope that its singer probably takes a good deal of comfort in: “Rock stars don’t die/ They only fade away.” The tearjerker of a track will appear on Sting’s forthcoming rock-oriented album 57th and 9th, due out November 11th.
