House of Cards has run for four successful seasons on Netflix without so much as a word uttered in the opening credits. Its theme, composed by Jeff Beal, is entirely sans lyrics, instead relying on devious strings and echoing trumpets to set the show’s tone. But having penned songs for Beyoncé, Father John Misty has decided he has the way with words needed to write lyrics for Beal’s score.
“This hand I’ve been dealt/ From beneath the deck/ Is it the ace or jack/ It’s the dealers bet,” begin the lyrics Josh Tillman posted in a series of Tweets. It’s hard to match up exactly when and how FJM is thinking these words would be sung during the theme, but you can just imagine the melodramatic tone. Check out his complete “official lyrics” below, and see if you can sing along.
