Director Gareth Edwards runs away from Godzilla 2

on May 13, 2016, 3:34pm

Gareth Edwards has waved buh bye to Godzilla 2.

Currently, there’s no reason for his departure, but it could be due to scheduling. Earlier this week, Legendary and Warner Bros. shifted and confirmed a number of dates in their Kaijuniverse, the shared cinematic universe between Godzilla and King Kong.

The sequel to Edwards’ 2014 blockbuster reboot was pushed back nine full months to March 22nd, 2019, in order to serve as a proper prelude to their big budget matchup, Godzilla vs. King Kong, for the following year on 2020.

It could be that the Rogue One director has some other opportunities on his plate. Or, it could just mean he’s not interested in investing that much time on another go-around with the lizard. Which is a bummer as he would have been able to play with villains Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah, as confirmed last year by Legendary.

In the meantime, Kong: Skull Island is still set for release next year on March 10th. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) and written by Max Borenstein (Godzilla), John Gatins, Dan Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy), and Derek Connolly (Jurassic World), the film stars Brie LarsonTom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, and Corey Hawkins.
