FIDLAR enter a world of emoji in new video for “Why Generation” — watch

on February 01, 2016, 1:05pm

FIDLAR delivered one of 2015’s best videos when they teamed with director Ryan Baxley for “40oz on Repeat”. As 2016 gets into its groove, they’re back with another early contender from Baxley in their new clip for “Why Generation”.

Animator Nolan Fabricius takes the garage punk quartet into a reality made entirely of emoji. As the band make their way to a gig, they stroll through a city populated by little yellow faces. These round inhabitants get into food fights with static pizzas, ice cream cones, and yes, eggplants. They rob banks wearing strange devil masks, and even cause a jailbreak at the local zoo. But instead of experiencing the weird, wonderful world around them, everyone seems to be viewing things through their mobile devices, which is something FIDLAR simply won’t tolerate at their concert.

It’s a smartly layered commentary for a song about millennial struggles and failures, as it rejects smartphone obsession while utilizing art made popular through social media, all from the perspective of a dude watching the video on his smartphone. Check it out below.
