The 40-year-old New Zealand director is known best for his low-budget comedies, most recently the Jemaine Clement-starring horror mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows.
Waititi may seem a bit green to lead the massive franchise, which to date has earned over a billion dollars for the studio. However, as of late, Marvel has veered more toward the independent filmmaker, hiring Peyton Reed to direct Ant-Man and Jon Watts to helm the forthcoming Spider-Man reboot.
Titled Thor: Ragnarok, the film is set to hit theaters on November 3rd, 2017. Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost are penning the script, with Chris Hemsworth once again set to portray the titular character.
