Netflix to revive Gilmore Girls for four 90-minute movies

Netflix has made nostalgia part of its business model as of late by reviving Full House and Arrested Development for new seasons. Now, the streaming giant is giving fans of the beloved CW program Gilmore Girls a chance to return to Stars Hollow.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is in negotiations with Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, as well as Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, aka Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, for four 90-minute movies.

Gilmore Girls originally ran for seven seasons between 2000 and 2007. Due to a contract dispute with CW, Sherman-Palladino resigned prior to the show’s final season. In the years since, she’s expressed a desire to revive the show and give it the ending she original intended.

“It’s always a bummer when you don’t get to end it,” Sherman-Palladino said at the Austin TV Festival earlier this year. “I had hoped maybe that there would have been a call, ‘Hey, it’s the last episode, do you want to come back?’ And there wasn’t. But that’s OK, that’s not the way it works in Hollywood where there are rules.”

The Hollywood Reporters says Netflix intends to bring back many of the show’s original cast members, with a few exceptions. Edward Herrman, who played Richard Gilmore, passed away last December. Meanwhile, Melissa McCarthy, who played Sookie St. James, has seen her popularity skyrocket to A-list status in the years since the show signed off the air, and is unlikely to return.
