Woody Harrelson is one of those actors that is a delight to see in any role. His charismatic personality has you rooting for him even when he’s being an unfaithful detective on True Detective or a piss drunk mentor in the Hunger Games films. It may be difficult to cheer him on in his newest role, though, as he’s just taken the part of the villain in the upcoming War of the Planet of the Apes.
For the third film in the current Planet of the Apes series and the eighth film in the franchise overall, Harrelson will play a character named The Colonel, who we can only assume will be leading the charge against Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his army of simians. Plot details are scarce, but that’s not necessarily much of a hurdle when the main crux of the film is explained in the title.
War of the Planet of the Apes is due out July 14th, 2017 and will see the return of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves.
Harrelson has a number of exciting projects coming out between now and when we’ll see him battling primates. He’s got two sequels coming up: the final installment in The Hunger Games franchise (Mockingjay – Part 2) and a follow-up to the magician action film Now You See Me sub-titled The Second Act. He’ll also be playing the titular role in both LBJ, about President Lyndon B. Johnson, and Wilson, based on the graphic novel by Daniel Clowes. He’s also starring in the heist film Triple Nine, which has one hell of a cast that includes Kate Winslet, Casey Affleck, Anthony Mackie, Gal Gadot, and Aaron Paul, among others.
