Sia shares new song “Alive”, originally written for Adele — listen

on September 24, 2015, 10:10am

Prior to becoming a global pop star, Sia made a name for herself working behind-the-scenes as a songwriter for the likes of Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Ed Sheeran. For her latest album, reportedly titled This Is Acting, Sia’s pooling together a collection of songs that she’d originally penned for other artists.

“I’m calling it This Is Acting because they are songs I was writing for other people, so I didn’t go in thinking ‘this is something I would say,’” she told NME earlier this year. “It’s more like play-acting. It’s fun.” Update — 12:06 p.m.: Sia told Zane Lowe that the LP would include songs she’d done for Beyoncé and Rihanna. She also revealed one of her songs did end up making it on Adele’s highly-anticipated new album, due out in November, and that a collaboration with FKA twigs is in the works.

Our first look at Sia’s forthcoming full-length, and the first real new material since her 2014 smash 1000 Forms of Fear, comes with “Alive”, a song intended for another pop icon, Adele. An anthemic ballad that swings high and low, it was co-written by Sia, Adele, and Tobias Jesso Jr. According to the “Chandelier” singer, Adele had offered her $1 million for the track; however, although Sia liked Adele’s version, she ended up keeping it for herself. At one point, Rihanna, too, owned rights to the track.

This Is Acting is expected sometime later this year. Meanwhile, proper Adele material, also co-written with Jesso, is supposedly due out in November.
