Ceremony softened its sound from hardcore to post-punk on its most recent album, The L-Shaped Man, but now the California band is reaching all the way into Britpop. In a new episode of the AV Club’s “Undercover” series, the band gives Oasis’ “Rock ’n’ Roll Star” a spooky twist in a sprawling, six-minute cover.
Pulling the song into their own dark domain, the bass tone here is pure goth and the song is slowed down by a good percentage. Still, frontman Ross Farrar gives his best Liam Gallagher impression, even as he makes a joke at the expense of the song’s lyrics, which he apparently had some trouble learning.
