Angry Birds trailer flaps and squawks onto the web — watch

When was the last time you used your finger to pull back a little slingshot and launch a colorful digital bird at a bunch of green pigs and wooden blocks? Been awhile, right? After all, you’re probably too busy clicking on little pieces of candy to try to make other pieces of candy explode. That’s one of the reasons Rovio, the makers of the once-super popular Angry Birds game, have seen their profits fall an astounding 73% in the last year.

But while the company is struggling to keep employees (they laid of 16% a year ago, with another 30% ready to go before year’s end), there’s hope on the horizon for a financial boon: The Angry Birds Movie. While over-reaching into merchandise ended up hurting Rovio in the long run, a short-term boost from the upcoming animated film could help the company rebound.

And the film certainly has the draw to support such a turn around. Its huge cast includes stars like Jason SudeikisJosh GadDanny McBrideMaya RudolphKate McKinnonBill HaderPeter Dinklage, and Keegan-Michael Key, among many others. Plus, there’s a script from former Simpsons writer Jon Vitti and while Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly are first time directors, animation and art department resumes include Frozen, Weck-It Ralph, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, even Mulan and The Iron Giant.

The pieces are in place, but can the film knock them all down? We’ll find out when it hits theaters on its cushy May 20th, 2016 release date. Below, watch the first trailer.

Below, read Sony’s official synopsis for the film.

The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis – We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride – This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.
