Willis Earl Beal spent the last two weeks in a Portland jail

on August 05, 2015, 5:15pm

Last week saw the release of Willis Earl Beal’s latest single, “Survive”. At the time, however, the experimental blues and R&B artist was sitting in a jail cell where he was held for two weeks.

SPIN reports that Beal was locked up in a Portland, Oregon jail on July 23rd for criminal mischief and harassment. What exactly led to the arrest is yet clear, but Jean Smith of the indie rock outfit Mecca Normal said on Twitter that she heard the incident was connected to “a broken window at a club.” A representative for Beal said that Smith’s “assumptions are correct.”

YouCaring drive, which was launched to raise money for Beal’s release, noted that “All great artists have a crazy night every now and then. That doesn’t mean they deserve to be in jail for an indefinite amount of time.” Beale’s rep confirmed to SPIN that he has since been released and is currently free after making bail.
