Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron to star in Baywatch film

on August 10, 2015, 3:36pm

Dwayne Johnson can add Baywatch to the increasingly large list of adaptations he’s attached to. According to Variety, Hollywood’s highest paid actor is set to appear in a big screen remake of the classic ’90s TV show, with Zac Efron closing in on a deal of his own.

Update: Johnson has confirmed Efron’s casting. He also revealed the movie will be “big, fun, and Rated R.”

Details are scare regarding what direction Paramount Pictures is guiding the film, though rumors suggest it will be a comedic endeavor. Seemingly in line with this belief, the studio has tapped Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief director Seth Gordon to helm the film. Johnson’s tweet also confirms that the film will be rated R.

Damian Shannon and Mark Swift (Freddy vs. Jason, Disney’s forthcoming Aladdin prequel Genie) penned the script, while Johnson will produce alongside his Seven Bucks Productions partner Dany Garcia, as well as Montecito Pictures and Beau Flynn.

For those too young to remember (Editor’s Note: God, we’re getting old)Baywatch was an “action drama” about a group of uber-attractive lifeguards in Los Angeles County that ran for 11 seasons. Known as much for its ridiculous high stakes (everything from serial killers to nukes served as centerpieces) as its trademark slow-motion running sequences, the series made household names out of the likes of David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, and Carmen Electra.
