The first trailer has been released for the upcoming drama Suffragette, starring Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep, and Helena Bonham Carter in the story of the early 20th century fight for women’s rights in the UK.
Mulligan leads the film as Maud, a factory worker with a husband and child, who is willing to give it all up when Meryl Streep’s Emmeline Pankhurst inspires her to join the early feminist movement. This trailer shows both the inspirational and dramatic aspects of the suffragette movement, and showcases Mulligan and Streep in performances that are sure to garner some awards buzz.
Brendan Gleeson and Ben Whishaw also star in the film, which will open the London Film Festival in October. Suffragette was directed by Sarah Gavron and written by Abi Morgan.
