Bill Murray is about to the change the Middle East forever — well, in a fictional sense. Come October, the veteran star will take on Afghanistan in Rock the Kasbah, a new dramedy by equally veteran director Barry Levinson (Rain Man) and equally veteran screenwriter Mitch Glazer (Scrooged). It’s an old school team made fresh and young thanks to a supporting cast featuring Kate Hudson, Zooey Deschanel, Danny McBride, Scott Caan, and Bruce Willis. Okay, so maybe that last name throws a wrench into that idea, but hey, it’s still a good mix.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Rock The Kasbah is the story of Richie Lanz (Bill Murray), a rock manager with a golden ear and a taste for talent, who has seen better times. When he takes his last remaining client on a USO tour of Afghanistan, she gets cold feet and leaves him penniless and without his passport in Kabul. While trying to find his way home, Richie befriends a band of misfits and discovers a young girl with an extraordinary voice. Against all odds, Richie will take his last shot at creating an unlikely superstar.”
Today, the Weinstein Company has unveiled both the film’s poster and first trailer. The former you can catch below and the latter you’ll have to watch over at Apple. There’s a lot of feel-good vibes coming from the preview, though much of that has to do with David Bowie and Harry Nilsson. Check it out and then mark your calendars: Rock the Kashbah hits theaters October 23rd.
