T. Hardy Morris shares bruising new single “Likes of Me” — listen

on June 02, 2015, 12:20pm

T. Hardy Morris is set to return on June 23rd with his sophomore solo album. Known primarily as a founding member of both Dead Confederate and the supergroup Diamond Rugs, Morris put together yet another band for this later release and dubbed them The Hardknocks. Together, they’ll release Hardy & The Hardknocks: Drownin on a Mountaintop via Dangerbird Records.

The follow-up to 2013’s Audition Tapes, the new LP was actually teased last October with the single “Painted on Attitude”. That song signaled a shift in direction from Morris’ quieter debut album, pushing his alt-country twangs into a dusty garage. That snotty, punky attitude was made evident again on recent single “My Me”. Trading his mellow vibes in for something a bit dirtier was a highly conscious move, as the impending birth of his daughter forced Morris to reconcile his rock-and-roll youth with swiftly approaching fatherhood.

“I wanted this record to be a kind of end-of-an-era for me,” Morris relates. “It was a very deliberate thing to record these songs before the birth of my first child. I was in a headspace and I wanted to capture it before I became a dear old dad.”

Perhaps no single so far makes this headspace more clear than “Likes of Me”. The track opens with the buzz of an amp before kicking into the most straight punk number we’ve heard yet from Drownin On a Mountaintop. With stomping and squealing guitars pushing off one another, Morris seems to be wrestling with what he’ll look like to his offspring when he tells them tales of his younger self. “Sit down, it’s story time children/ that’s why I woke you up,” go the opening lyrics. “Maybe I can scare you silly/ Not to do the things I done.” During the chorus, Morris admits that when it comes to liking him, “some do, some don’t,” and through all the snarl, he’s just hoping his daughter will.
