Yukon Blonde premieres new song “I Wanna Be Your Man” — listen

on May 28, 2015, 9:00am

Yukon Blonde’s 2012 album, Tiger Talk, succeeded on the strength of its harmonies and power pop prowess. Judging by the band’s latest song “I Wanna Be Your Man”, follow-up LP On Blonde might just see the indie rockers strike gold once again.

The band’s previous releases recalled Fleet Foxes and other pastoral-minded ’70s rock, however, its latest offering has more in common with the likes of psychedelic contemporaries Tame Impala. Here, zipping and fuzzy synthesizers and heartbeat-like bass, send the Vancouver natives far beyond their comfort zone. Still, Yukon Blonde feed off a foundation of solid pop songwriting and embrace the challenge of a brawnier, more aggressive sound with a palpable sense of rock star panache. One can just imagine the band’s guitarists throwing kicks mid-lick like nobody’s business before diving head-first into the arena-sized outro.

Frontman Jeff Innes spoke about the track’s beginnings, saying: “‘I Wanna be Your Man’ started off as a drum machine and a guitar riff, it naturally has that T-Rex thing goin’ on, so our focus when we recorded it was to keep it glam and androgynous and absolutely avoid gettin’ all bro vibes or sound like a Black Keys song; the synths and the lipstick bridge really help with that and Tony Hoffer got our angle ’cause he mixed the shit out of it.”

On Blonde hits stores on June 16th via Dine Alone Records. Pre-order the LP here. For more, check out “Saturday Night”.
