The trailer for Jem and the Holograms is truly outrageously bad — watch

Over the weekend, movie-goers got their first look at Hollywood’s live-action adaptation of Jem and the Holograms. Tonight brings the release of the first teaser trailer, and fans of the original animated TV series are sure to be disappointed.

The film takes little, if any, inspiration from the ’80s cartoon, which centered around the adventures of music executive Jerrica Benton, who used hologram projections to live out a singer alter-ego named Jem. In Universal Pictures’ production, Brenton is a young, unknown singer-songwriter who is discovered via YouTube. The Jem and the Holograms persona is bestowed on her by the head of Starlight Records (played by Juliette Lewis). Friction within her band grows as Jem becomes more and more popular, and the whole thing appears to play out like a C-Rate Disney movie.

The film also does not include mention of rival bands like The Misfits and The Stingers, which played a major role in the TV series.

As of publication, the trailer’s YouTube page has 135 likes to 606 dislikes, and the reception isn’t any kinder in the comments section.

Jem and the Holograms hits theaters October 23rd, 2015. Aubrey Peeples stars as Jerrica Brenton/Jem. Other cast members include Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko, Aurora Perrineau, and Molly Ringwald.
