Billy Corgan retires from pro wrestling to launch career in musical theater

My mother always told me that when the Universe closes a door, it opens a window. Here’s the door: Billy Corgan has ended his affiliation with the Chicago-based indie wrestling promotion Resistance Pro Wrestling. Don’t worry, it’ll always be real to me, Billy.

In a statement via Twitter, the Smashing Pumpkins frontman wrote, “For those interested, I’ve left RESISTANCE PRO WRESTLING, officially and unofficially. Details to follow in the coming weeks. And though this is by no means a way to reach them, I’d like to thank the talented wrestlers, managers, and valets I’ve worked with.” Corgan served as the league’s “creative director,” helping direct character development and storylines. He was also set to appear in RPW’s upcoming AMC reality series before it was canceled mid-development.

Now, here’s the window: As Corgan departs the hallowed halls of some run-down bingo hall, he readies an entrance into the glamorous world of musical theater. Corgan is one of several names attached to the “The 48-Hour Musicals: Encore!”, which will see him writing and co-producing a 20-minute musical over the course of two days.

As The Chicago Tribune reports, Corgan’s production revolves around “the Eleusinian Mysteries, a religious rite in Ancient Greece” that celebrated “the cult of Demeter and Persephone.” In an accompanying statement, Corgan expressed a “growing” interest in musical theater, and based off recent offerings like his eight-hour, Siddhartha-inspired ambient jam, he’s got more than enough theatricality in the tank.

Corgan’s production will run December 4th-14th at The Musical Theatre Company. Below, revisit another compelling creation from Corgan during his heyday with RPW.

Of course, his theatrical debut isn’t the only thing on Corgan’s plate these days: He’s also gearing up to release Smashing Pumpkins’ new album, Monuments to an Elegy, and is writing a memoir.
