Stream: Tennis’ new album Ritual in Repeat

on September 02, 2014, 7:00pm

Tennis, the husband and wife duo of Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, are set to release their new album, Ritual in Repeat, on September 9th through Communion Records. In anticipation, the LP is streaming in its entirety at Pitchfork.

The 11-track effort serves as Tennis’ third full-length to date and follows last year’s Small Sound EP. Its tracks were recorded in three different cities, each with a big-name producer at the helms: The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney in Nashville; Spoon’s Jim Eno in Austin; and The Shins’ Richard Swift in Portland. All three had previously collaborated with the Denver-based duo, as Carney produced their 2012 album Young & Old and Eno and Swift both lent production to Small Sound.

According to Moore, recording Ritual in Repeat was no easy feat. She told Relix

This album is very strange for us. All of the final tracks are going to be pulled from several different studio sessions that we’ve had over the past year. We recorded five songs with Jim Eno in Austin last February and we recorded with Richard Swift in Oregon for two weeks in June. Then, in January of this year, we spent time in Nashville recording five songs with Patrick Carney. We’re taking a few songs from every studio session and that’s going to end up being the record. It’s been a really long, arduous quest. We’ve been all over the map with the recordings and even our writing. We started off so narrow and only wrote lo-fi surf pop. Everything had a surf-beat. We only had three instruments and everything was so specific that now, as we’ve grown, we are trying to challenge ourselves and transform musically.

The new LP is preceded by the singles “Never Work For Free” and the Carney-produced “I’m Callin'”. Below, stream “I’m Callin'”.

Pre-orders for the album are ongoing.
