Perfume Genius announces new album, Too Bright, shares “Queen”

on July 15, 2014, 9:52am

Mike Hadreas, aka Perfume Genius, has announced the follow-up to 2012’s excellent LP, Put Your Back N 2 It. Entitled Too Bright, the new album will be released September 23rd through Matador Records. Spanning 11 tracks, it features contributions from Portishead’s Adrian Utley and PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish on multiple songs.

Lead single “Queen” marks a musical departure for Hadreas. As the press materials note, it’s his “most anthemic” song yet, the buzzing synths and grander production make it much louder and enveloping than his earlier piano ballads. On the track, he also “deconstructs gay panic with relish.” Hadreas, who is gay, explains the song is addressed to the “faces of blank fear when I walk by…if these fucking people want to give me some power – if they see me as some sea witch with penis tentacles that are always prodding and poking and seeking to convert the muggles – well, here she comes.” Listen in below.

Too Bright Tracklist:
01. I Decline
02. Queen
03. Fool
04. No Good
05. My Body
06. Don’t Let Them In
07. Grid
08. Longpig
09. I’m a Mother
10. Too Bright
11. All Along

Hadreas will also embark on an extensive tour in support of the LP. His full schedule is below.
