Listen: Tobias Jesso Jr.’s stunning new song “True Love”

on July 24, 2014, 9:06pm

Days after Girls broke up in 2012, the band’s bassist Chet White received a promising demo from a Vancouver singer-songwriter named Tobias Jesso Jr. As White relayed in an interview with Paste last year, he soon hit the studio to work with Jesso on his debut album. Up until this point, the only thing we’ve heard from Jesso was last summer’s solemn piano ballad “Just A Dream”. Now he’s broken his silence by leaking another demo for a track called “True Love”.

Once again, Jesso performs solo on piano, relishing in the nostalgic qualities of the lo-fi recording. He softly coos with a comforting tone over lightly played piano chords, creating a sound reminiscent of some of Paul McCartney’s own solo work. Throughout the course of the song he details the doubts and triumphs of young romance, finding the characters asking each other difficult questions like ,”Do you need me like I need you?” Jesso’s simplistic approach gives weight to his bittersweet lyricism, making for a stirring ode to his definition of “true love.”
