Just a fifth of the way through its latest season, and the A.V. Club’s Undercover series has already seen Wye Oak pay tribute to Kate Bush’s “Running Up The Hill” and The Men tackle Devo’s “Gates of Steel”. Today, UK post-punk outfit Eagulls make their way to the little square room to cover The Stone Roses’ smash 1989 single “I Wanna Be Adored”.
Though Eagulls’ logic for the choice is fairly linear (one British band repping another British band), the lads also have a fun little story involving the song’s minimalist lyrics and a Spanish bus driver. Aside from a hearty laugh, Eagulls’ interpretation of the track sees them brilliantly emphasizing more of its moody shoegaze aspects, spinning out a lot of the ’80s ambiance for more maligned spurts of reverb.
