Listen: The Wytches’ new song “The Holy Tightrope”

on June 09, 2014, 2:00pm

In July, rising UK outfit The Wytches will embark on a U.S. tour, opening for Cloud Nothings and METZ. To coincide with the visit, they’ve announced a limited-edition 7-inch single featuring “Wire Frame Mattress” and a brand new track entitled “The Holy Tightrope”.

Whereas its A-side invokes Smashing Pumpkins, “The Holy Tightrope” is a lo-fi take on Pavement. Grimy guitars fade in and out, like the stomping of some metallic giant’s boots, and drums pound and surge with little reason, all while singer Kristian Bell does his best to avoid the mayhem with oddball muttering. More doom and gloom than some of their more catchier, surf-inspired fare, the blown-out, bizarre aesthetic fits the trio to a T.

Listen in below:

The Wytches’ U.S. tour comes in support of their debut album, Annabel Dream Reader, due out August 26th via Partisan Records. In addition to “Wire Frame Mattress”, it features 12 other tracks that achieve a “dark and heady sound that embraces the black arts and the more extreme limits of rock, but which is never prescriptively macabre. All at once the songs reference surf, grunge, metalcore, spy movie scores.”
