Earlier this year, we heard Diane Coffee, the solo project of Foyxgen drummer Shaun Fleming, offer up a folksy take on Washed Out’s “Amor Fati”. Today, in honor of Brian Wilson’s 72nd birthday, Diane Coffee returns with a cover of The Beach Boys classic “Kokomo”.
Drawing on both the original’s island-charm and his own full-length debut, 2013’s My Friend Fish, Fleming’s rendition of “Kokomo” is equal parts summer bliss and hazy psychedelics. Ironically enough, Wilson — who has a few projects of his own in the works — wasn’t technically involved in the 1988 recording of “Kokomo”; but hey, it’s the thought that counts, right?
