Yeasayer’s Anand Wilder pens his own musical, Break Line, featuring star-studded cast

on May 28, 2014, 11:45am

In 2004, some two years before co-founding Yeasayer, guitarist Anand Wilder and friend/composer Maxwell Kardon began work on a musical entitled Break Line. After over a decade of working in spurts, usually between Yeasayer albums, Wilder and Kardon have finally completed work on the project. It will receive release on July 15th through Secretly Canadian.

According to a press release, Break Line is based on “a labor conflict in a Western Pennsylvania coal town that (Wilder and Kardon’s) fathers had learned about from an old folk song taught in Quaker schools in the 1950s.” Drawing inspiration from “Gram Parsons, as well as rock concept records of early ’70s Kinks and The Byrds”, the duo forged “their own version of a classic story of betrayal, pride and lost love.”

Like any good musical, Break Line is rounded out by an all-star cast. Vocalists include Yeasayer’s own Chris Keating, Dirty Projectors’ Haley Dekle, Man Man’s Ryan Kattner, Quinn Walker and Austin Fisher of Suckers, and Wilder himself. Meanwhile, the backing band features the other member of Yeasayer, Ira Wolf Tuton, Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij, Kishi Bashi, Steve Marion of Delicate Steve, Britt Myers (Charlift, Passing Strange), and more.

As our first taste of the 11-track effort, Wilder and Kardon have unveiled “Wedding Day”, a simple, rootsy number that builds and builds into a rollicking slice of ’60s folk-pop. Listen in below.
