Stream: Wye Oak’s new album Shriek

on April 20, 2014, 11:51pm

Wye Oak will release their fourth studio album, Shriek, on April 29th via Merge Records. In anticipation, it’s streaming in full over at NPR.org.

The follow-up to 2011’s Civilian was co-produced by Nicolas Vernhes (Marnie Stern, Dirty Projectors, Deerhunter) at Brooklyn’s Rare Book Room studios. The 10-track effort is preceded by two singles, “The Tower” and “Glory”.

In a recent interview, frontwoman Jenn Wasner explained that “there’s not a lick of guitar on this whole record. It basically inverts what we were responsible for”. She added, “The idea was really appealing to me because we had sort of hit a wall, just with the complete and total excess of touring that we had done, the use and overuse of that format. It tainted the guitar for me and I was finding it really, really hard to get anything out of it from a writing perspective. I wasn’t excited about it — too much baggage. It just felt tired to me.”

Pre-orders for the album are ongoing. Below, watch the video for “The Tower”:
