In one of the more controversial victories at last night’s Grammy Awards, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis topped Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Drake, and Jay Z to win Best Rap Album. The same Macklemore and Ryan Lewis who were nearly blacklisted from the category mere days prior.
Turns out even Macklemore himself has mixed feelings about winning and took to Instagram to share a text message he sent to Kendrick. “You got robbed,” Macklemore confessed. “I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and sucks that I robbed you.”
Here it is in full:

My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album… I'm honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that's taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it's proper respect.. With that being said, thank you to the fans. You're the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That's what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys
As one of my Twitter friends aptly pointed out last night, it’s not like you’ll even remember who won the Grammy a year from now. Without looking it up, can you tell me who won Best Rap Album in 2013? That would be Drake’s Take Care. What does age better in the memory bank, however, are performances like the one Kendrick delivered last night. So, the King of Compton shouldn’t sweat.
Plus, this Jay Z pep talk should definitely help:
