It’s interesting how close the career path of Bon Iver and Megafaun runs. Sure, they’re all lovers of Americana music and formerly members of DeYarmond Edison, whose break-up led to the formation of both acts, but it runs deeper than just being bros. Both have captured the attention of the music world with their vastly different yet similarly sounding future folk tunes. And now, as Bon Iver have recently dropped their fantastically ambitious sophomore LP, so too are Megafaun prepping a new, equally as ambitious album with the September 20th release of Megafaun (via Hometapes). Hey, both are self-titled, too!

While Bon Iver utilized synths and a fully fleshed out band, Megafaun are continuing the work of 2010’s Heretofore EP and taking their sound even further into the celestial unknown. Recorded late last year at April Base in Fall Creek, WI (where Bon Iver has recorded), the band worked with producer BJ Burton on the 14-track effort, which makes use of everything from rural free jazz to delta blues. The opening track, “Real Slow”, sees the band put forth an autobiographical anthem that summarizes the new LP: “Rise up early/Seize the day/Take your time/Everyone knows/If it starts too fast /It’s gonna end real slow.” We’re certain that their end is nowhere in sight.

While there’s no definitive tracklist available, the band put together an album trailer, which is available for viewing below. The trio also plan to tour extensively this fall, with dates to be announced shortly.
